It's my understanding that some FLDS members feel like it is their duty to bilk the government for whatever they can get. It's also my understanding that it's common practice for second, third, fourth... wives to go on welfare or other government assistance programs and claim that they don't know who the father of their child is or claim that he's not around as a way for polygamous men to maintain having huge families.
Can't remember now where I've heard this stuff but there you have it.
That is essentially the business plan. Enough aid and support money comes in and with economies of scale (the more wives the better it works) they can live very well with the GOVERNMENT funding their religion.
