Okay, looking into the NRA's history and how it became so hard-line, apparently, until about 1977's "Cincinnatti Revolt," the NRA was not terribly political, and largely bipartisan. Then, in May 1977, in an attempt to make sure the organisation became more committed to gun rights, the old guard was purged from the leadership, and it became the unusually influential lobbying group we all know and tolerate.

Even many regular members of the NRA tend to support reasonable levels of gun control. Case in point, a recent poll says that "93% of those living in households with gun owners and 85% in households with NRA members support background checks." That said, the leadership doesn't give a shit what the 93% of people they represent want. If the leadership still gets its money from the gun industry, they can easily afford to not give a crap about what their own members want.

Just like the Republican Party they've latched onto.

A membership revolt would raise hell with their money supply. The give-a-fuck attitude of the current members is main due to inertia.
