The problem isn't that most humans are bad or evil, most are not. But, power does horrible things to governments and all you have to do to divide and conquer is sell bullshit utopias.
The concepts that brought more openness to the west were not sale of blind loyalty, but checks on power, and forced ritual is not the sign of of an open society.
