As has been stated in this thread repeatedly, and electively ignored as that may be, not everyone who owns firearms are dangerous or idiots at the trigger.
And interestingly enough you present yourself as having been a former Deputy. I'll presume you were armed. So then your platform becomes one of "Us" and "Them". Us, who are the law enforcement entitled to be armed. And them, which is in what you've implied, gun nuts who are everyone else not in your "Us" circle of approved for firearm possession.

And using the current situation in England as a justification for carrying firearms is pure rubbish. Guns are weak medicine for a sick population.

When a disarmed population are sitting ducks for the armed criminals that don't give one whit about gun control laws, or regulations that prohibit their having possession of firearms.
A disarmed population, even cops as in England by law, gives full license to those who do not obey the law, to do as they will amid a civilian populace that can't fight back on equal ground, and aren't even able to be saved by trained professionals in law enforcement, because they enforce the law that disarms the population not even they, who are disarmed too, can protect from armed aggressors.

That's rubbish, when the fish are there because the law keeps them swimming, while those who have them in their sights, don't give a damn about the law, but do appreciate the convenience of the barrel making it easier to hunt prey.

When I worked as a deputy, I got so sick of dealing with lowlifes whose children had missing teeth, who ate ramen every night washed down with Red Dog, and yet who somehow managed to own a dozen sidearms of all sorts.

You've never been in the mansions of the rich people in my area, who have gun rooms, perfect teeth, drink Cristal champaign, that very often they'll quip is their way of slumming, given the wine cellar that's in their basement.
The stereotype you have as one who prefers people be victims to armed aggression, is tragic. I presume you speak from your experiences, as that story you just told implies.
That's not the whole story and to imagine guns are bad, because there are people that are as irresponsible with them, as there are alcoholics who get behind the wheel of a weapon weighing thousands of pounds and drive at high rates of speed amid an innocent population who doesn't know they're coming. They maim and they kill, and very often that drunk driver walks away without a scratch. And every now and then they don't recall a thing about it once they're sober. I imagine you encountered that as a deputy.

If it is, if that's a causative factor to bury the 2nd inalienable right, then for all the headlines attesting to irresponsible law enforcement officers bearing weapons, be it their service weapon or their police car, it's going to be a long road to seize weapons across the board.

The UK has managed to avoid going down the simpleton's 2nd Amendment path, and the fact that they have done so in general successfully calls to mind this quote from Oscar Wilde, which is more appropriate than ever:
