Chook, looks like your perception of the current position of US citizens on gun ownership is incorrect. Support among the general public for stricter gun control laws in the US have been in decline for decades. For the last few years the polls indicate that most Americans do not support stricter gun control laws.

Some of you might be surprised that I, a certified gun nut and NRA life member, and many like me would support things like improved background checks, mandatory safety and proficiency training requirements for gun ownership.
On the other hand I don’t support further restrictions on the types of weapons law abiding US citizens are allowed to own. The National Firearms Act (NFA) of 1934 put an excise tax and mandatory registration on things like automatic weapons. Since that time there has been only one conviction for a homicide involving an automatic weapon by the legal owner of a NFA registered weapon. In that case, an Ohio police officer used his NFA registered MAC-11 .380 to murder an informant. You are going to have a hard time convincing me that American citizens should not be allowed to own machineguns since the only example in the US of a violent crime being committed with a legally owned machinegun in 77 years was committed by not by a civilian but a police officer.
