That's rather presumptuous of you. You have a direct line to what people in the past thought and what their motives were? I don't seriously doubt that they thought they were doing "God's" will and simply misinterpreted the "signs".
Serious question: how bad must things get for the believer to think he/she is living in the end times? After all, war, disease, famine, licentiousness, and corruption have been with us throughout the ages. I suppose you will appeal to alleged fulfillments of various prophesies, but those prophesies tend to be pretty vague -- so much so that it's understandable that others, living in bad times, might be forgiven for thinking those signs were being fulfilled in their lifetimes. No matter how messed up things may seem these days, I guarantee it's a walk in the park compared to the 14th Century.
