There are a few legitimate uses for them... but, even those, I think should be left for the trained authorities.
I've been killing things since I was 19. I'm very good at it. Fish and Wildlife ask me to come on the thinning hunts. There aren't enough "trained authorities" to effectively thin the deer populations. If not kept in check they'd be the cause of who know how many deaths on our highways each year.
As it stands, we have a detailed number for the deaths by firearms per year, huh?

Compare that with some 35 thousand dead on the roads every year... would a few deer cause an extra 10k fatalities?
If you didn't have a bunch of people armed to the teeth in the US, Fish and Wildlife would have to employ enough people to do their job.
