That's rather presumptuous of you. You have a direct line to what people in the past thought and what their motives were? I don't seriously doubt that they thought they were doing "God's" will and simply misinterpreted the "signs".
Serious question: how bad must things get for the believer to think he/she is living in the end times? After all, war, disease, famine, licentiousness, and corruption have been with us throughout the ages. I suppose you will appeal to alleged fulfillments of various prophesies, but those prophesies tend to be pretty vague -- so much so that it's understandable that others, living in bad times, might be forgiven for thinking those signs were being fulfilled in their lifetimes. No matter how messed up things may seem these days, I guarantee it's a walk in the park compared to the 14th Century.
God says it will be as in the days of Noah, people will go about their daily lives suspecting nothing different from the day before, things will seem normal to the ungodly. The generation of Christians will recognize the time because God will reveal His teachings to them. I will say this the end is fast approaching and some on this site are young enough they could see the end. Remember this the number of Christians will be on the decline and the number of the doomed will be on the rise. This is a very serious answer to your question.

God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.
