It could be she was going off her own curriculum, she had a lot of wacky beliefs, but she existed and taught every catholic child in my parish that. Its not an uncommon belief at all amoung conservative Catholics. It could be that your parish is just more liberal, I don't really know. We were only one step from having a latin mass. So these beliefs definitely exist. Thw vatican, believe it or not, doesn't magically control every minutia of every parish. I know, because its what I wad taught. Then later learned about the natural family planning, which as I said, couple with 5 children told me.(December 22, 2017 at 3:57 pm)CapnAwesome Wrote: Most Catholics just use regular birth control, of course. I was raised Catholic in a very conservative perish, and our CCD teacher (who was 60 and an annunciated virgin to Christ) absolutely taught us that sex was for procreation only. I'm not sure that timed abstinence was ever brought up, but if you weren't trying to make more Catholics, it was a no go. She also taught us Mary and Joseph remained virgins their whole marriage. Lolzwat?
Talk about backwards sex ed. Who needs elderly virgins telling you when to fuck? So while most Catholics don't follow what the Church is preaching, Conservative Catholics definitely belive that. Timed abstinence, I had religious Catholic neighbors in College, they told me they used that. They also were in their 20s and had 5 kids. They were exactly religious conservatives either.
Most people are Atheist forums talk as though the Church is something with uniform beliefs, but it's a massive number of people, and there are branches of Catholicism that disagree with each other, on a wider scale and down to individual parishes. So I sort of take issue with it when people say that Catholics do or say this. Or when you sometimes do the same thing. Most Catholics just use birth control, condoms and the pill and 84 % have no moral objection to birth control. The bunch of creepy old virgins at the head of the Vatican can say what they want, but people are going to use birth control.
Lol, Min gets the biggest Tax cut of atheist forums! 1%er !!!
My bold.
Sounds like your CCD teacher was making up her own rules then, because thats just not true at all. NFP (natural family planning/timed abstinence) is huge in the Church for couples who want to avoid pregnancy. It was actually part of our mandatory pre marriage prep.
As for Catholic people believing different things, I mean, sure... many do. But official Catholic teaching is laid out all very clearly in the CCC. If someone believes something different (like that sex is a sin unless yoire trying to make babies) that's their own rules, not official church teaching. Ive never known anyone who thinks that, but I dont doubt that they exist in the fringes.
(Edited to add)
But the point is, as an atheist now examining this it all just seems so silly. Irregardless of whether its strict about sex for procreation or not. This is a sexual system crafted by elderly virgins. And in hindsight of course its going to be ridiculous. I would never let elderly virgins tell me when to fuck. Natural pregnancy cycle or not. Ill just use birth control and fuck when I want to.
Luckily most Catholics agree with me, and morally approve and use birth control at the same rate as the rest of the population. So it really actually doesn't matter in the slightest what the Vatican says, not even to Catholics.
