Hmmm... an american housewife looking for a hobby?
I like to play Mahjong, the real Mahjong that requires 4 players. You could get a set and invite over 3 friends and waste a whole day in it.
I can send you a PDF with the rules that a friend of mine wrote. There are many sets of rules. The ones I play with are usually called "Classical Chinese" (there's a computer game for windows, mac and linux that uses these rules and lets you play it online and/or against bots: http://mahjong.julianbradfield.org/), Tournaments are played with the official Chinese rules; there's Japanese Mahjong with only 2 winds and things called Dora... and many others!
In the early 20th century, many American housewives used to play this awesome game and I think they came up with a few rules of their own.
I have this set: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Jongg-deluxe-faux-leather-case/dp/B0029WN27K/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_21_bs_tr_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=B5BEK1B13B8VJ3GX58KG and all it needed was some extra counting sticks, for scoring.... because we're always trying to make high scoring games and the ones that come with the set soon become too few. (I got my extra sticks, here: http://www.hoylesonline.com/shop/product.asp?P_ID=441)
