There is a reason it is much repeated and that is that it is the case.
Now people can be atheist for a number of reasons.
1: They may believe that there is no way that there can be a god.
2: They may not have seen an explanation of what a god is that makes sense in the real world.
3: They may currently not believe in god but be open to compelling evidence.
4: They may just not care and so haven't formed an opinion.
I'm between 2 and 3 myself.
Agnostic is a kind of atheist, it certainly isn't a kind of theist.
