What does he mean by the 'need for a strong military'? We had the most powerful military in the world, ever, by far, and recently we expanded on that. How strong is strong enough? Strong enough to win WW III by ourselves?

We could slash the military budget in half and we'd still be head and shoulders over the second-biggest spender, China. Hell, most of the countries we're likely to go to war with actually have lower defense budgets than Germany and Japan, whose militaries are, in Germany's case, such a joke that NATO won't even allow them in combat situations, and, in Japan's case,  explicitly forbidden by their constitution to go to war.
