I'm guessing you're referencing gay people trying to buy wedding cakes from bigots. If I'm wrong, correct me, because I know cake in general can be really emotional. Here's the thing, it's not traumatic. People don't claim it is. It's bigotry, which is vile. That said, I don't know why any gay or lesbian folks would want to buy a cake from people who are bigots. Take your business to someone who isn't a fucking joke.

On the latter, I seriously doubt that the consensus of the mental health profession would agree with you.
Anecdotally, my psychologist worked in the prison system for a number of years, and I guarantee she disagrees. Also anecdotally, I have had no problem refraining from the evil behavior (i.e. anti-social or harmful to self or others) I engaged in while ill now that I'm not.
On the former, sure - people need to be held accountable, if for no other reason, but to keep the rest of us safe.
It being a reason doesn't make it an excuse. If you're not utterly insane, then you have some control over your actions. This kid surely did. He made a very calculated decision to do what he did. He's not excused.
