It was Theodosius that gave christendom the power to prosecute a war. Christianity's rise in rome was nothing more or less than a political prop. It ended up serving the exact same purpose as the previous state cult. It wasn;t out of a lack of purpose in paganism nor was it any easier (or more difficult) to be a christian than a pagan...and the line between christianity and paganism was still more than a little bit blurry in 4th century rome.
Early christianity exploited the poor and a building social apathy. They aped the hellenic cults popular at the time while serving as an outlet for frustration against the ruling order of the day - even as they depended on those very same patricians for favor, funding, and influence. In turn, patricians rebranded themselves as qausi-populists, in part, by appeal to the superstition of the rabble and attempts at pious theater.
