Well at the moment the UK is a borderline third rate power rapidly transitioning into offshore banana republic and on the verge of breaking up. So if that's your goal I'd start panicing.
I blame the empire mentality. Even though we transitioned from being an empire by giving away most colonies and therefore didn't have to collapse or be invaded, the idea of British superiority has still blighted the ruling class. At least if we had been invaded then we would have got rid of the establishment that has been in continuous power since feudal times and had a true democracy.
However America's empire is lost, it's going to have repercussions for them for many generations.
