Distract the populous by punching down, as you horde all the money at the expense of crashing the economy. And somehow it works. They yell about how universal healthcare is going to turn us into Venezuela, as they shovel billions and billions of dollars into the military budget. The country is an oligarchy, and a lot of people are fine with it.
