I feel that much of McCain's reputation for being a maverick was overblown. While he never operated with the utter disdain for the opposition party as, say, Mitch McConnell currently does, he essentially voted down party lines for the last 20 or so years (I feel his most recent Obamacare vote was more of a middle finger to Trump than any ideological division from his party... I mean, his reasoning was about following Senate procedure).

His service - both military and political - should be honored, but I don't see him as some sort of American champion of grand ideals. Not when he eagerly got swept up in neo-con bullshit, or towards the end when he did fuckall about his party catering to, and becoming infested with, alt-right assholes.

Well they did do a survey of votes by senators, and McCain crossed party lines with votes the third most of any republican, behind a couple of NE republican, who are always moderate. Considering that he's was from one of the most conservative states, I'm not sure how the reputation is undeserved.

He would of been a terrible president though. I shudder at the thought of McCains foreign policy.

It's hard to knock on his personal biography though. He stayed in captivity because the Vietnamese wouldn't release other prisoners first as per the Geneva convention. That took major balls and courage.

Btw, I am in total shock that John McCains mother is still alive. Holy fuck.
