Then reload, unless you're under fire, at which point you return with your loaded pistol while seeking cover. If mass shooters picked the right equipment for what they wanted to do, it could only get worse.
The only point I can see to a rifle is shooting at folks across a field or in a parking lot from a distance, in single fire. It's appalling that most of the "prep" these folks do is just to get a big pile of guns, rather than the right guns. OTOH, we're dodging that bullet, at present..so that's nice.
