I think it's funny that, out of a desire not to pay peoples wages, and not anger people who didn't want to pay people wages, we wrote some flowery bullshit into a law that no one believed, which was actually about something else..and created a pleasant myth of americana to cover the entire affair.
It's at this point that I take a breath and realize that we've pretty much always been the way we are now.
OTOH, we did get gun rights out of the deal (which clearly makes some people super jealous), so it's not all a wash.
