Why were they hanging around Jerusalem for two years? Luke makes it clear they did their business and returned to their home in Nazareth, which only makes sense.
Besides, Herod the Great was long dead by the time Quirinius was governor of Syria and Rome ran the census of their newly acquired province in 6 CE.
Like I said before, at this time I have no answer for Quirinius, however I did say that Luke did not need to give details Matthew did and Matthew must have not felt it important to mention that they returned to Nazareth, seems a logical assumption that Joseph would take his family back to his home and business. I'm sure one day if enough material is dug up we'll find out the answer to Quirinius, but with the gaps in ancient history and the length of time we may never know, this is where some faith comes into Christian belief. Much of Egyptian history has to be pieced together, we are learning more because we recognize that from one pharaoh to the next that some of the previous pharaoh's history was erased and it seems no one minds waiting until these things are worked out. Egyptian history is much different than what I was taught in school years ago. Be patient we might find evidence about Quirinius soon.
