But like how a seatbelt might choke THE occasional person, their addition saves lives. And THE introduction of boilers had poisoned countless people, but also saves many developing deadly pnumonia and freezing of to death.Comparing a seat belt to a collision avoidence system is like comparing a bottle rocket to the space shuttle.
A seat belt isn' t likely to get otherwise sane people to learn and practice very risky behavior - like tailgating. If the car can react faster than you - you will learn to trust the collision avoidance - and you will maintain closer following distances than are humanly safe to do.
When those systems fail - take a guess what happens???
And what happens when you have someone driving a car drunk?
Or if a buschauffeur has a heart-attack on the highway?
Or if you simply miscalculate the distance yourself? You never ever had a fender bender. No-one in your family or friends. Humans make mistakes. Computers too, but if they tend to outperform humans... well...
That's all I've been saying mate. You act like we should distrust these systems because they might fail. But you seem to turn a blind eye to the systems that our own bodies are limited to. If computerized systems outperform human systems and create a safer world throughout the board and consistently, and only then, I would urge for them to take over.
You don't have to convince me computers are not infallible. But humans are fallible too. So it becomes a matter of which fallible system causes least damage and death on the road. And guess what, not only do I think there might one day be computers who can drive more safely than I can. (I'm not a really good driver.) I think one day there can be computers that can drive more safely than you can. And for my safety, if it's been shown to be so, I'd prefer that to take the wheel over you.
