Given the idiotic way in which most people read the Bible, it's understandable they would want better-trained people to guide everyone else.
Indeed, it was also difficult to maintain social control if they allowed unauthorized interpretations to proliferate. The catholic interpretation isn't any less idiotic, but at least it's theirs.
