I was assigned to the port shaft alley during sea and anchor detail when I was on the Oriskany. 8 decks down from the weather deck, IIRC. That was the passageway where you had to go by the Marines who were protecting the alleged nukes. One time I had the flu and the attendant muscle aches, cramping and diarrhea. That made for a real pleasant stay in that hole. I don't miss it at all.

Hard to say. The people on the island may be closely related to the native people who were frogmarched out to someplace really cold.
