I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.
If you want material advantages, a success is a success. You can learn by becoming a success and maintaining your success.
Although we may learn more from failures, sometimes we just learn how to fail rather than how to succeed.
On the other hand, I do know successful people who confuse their expertise with knowledge of other areas. They can become arrogant and fail to listen to people who have other kinds of expertise.
So I think the saying points out an important observation, but it's too much of an over-statement. It comes close to rationalizing failures.
IOW, would you say the all inclusive language of the quote takes it beyond the realm of truth? Perhaps it's tangential to truth?
The god who allows children to be raped out of respect for the free will choice of the rapist, but punishes gay men for engaging in mutually consensual sex couldn't possibly be responsible for an intelligently designed universe.
