Looking back, now, we can see that it’s proponents were plainly and clearly wrong. This is one of the many benefits of hindsight. Thing is, we have access to tools and data they didn’t, and it’s easy to see why they thought what they did, then.
There were, ofc, people who had insisted it was wrong before it was superseded.
Newtons gravitational theory was wrong and replaced by Einstein and the general theory of relativity.
But Newtons equations work well at some levels and are still used.
