I think that's stupid for a plethora of reasons. Most people do it for show and are usually compensating for something when they do.

The good guy with a gun is nothing but a fantasy from watching too many movies
Good for you that you lock them up. Still not the point.
We do not live in a perfect world where everyone thinks like you. Firearms are made like toys and marketed like toys, and far too many people go into a buy thinking it is as simple as having no record.
I do not see why anyone should have a problem with a ban on big clips or assault weapons. I do not see why anyone should have a problem with a buyback program.
I especially do not see why any shop owner or seller should think it is evil to check out the person they are selling to.
Even the political right on this issue says, "Just keep them out of the wrong hands". I agree, so they shouldn't shit their pants when I agree with them.
In a perfect world if everyone locked up their guns, and we had the same stats as our allies like Australia or Canada or New Zealand, again, nobody would be bitching.
But the truth for now remains, we make them like candy and hand them out like candy.
I think a lot of Americans share the same viewpoint as you do. I think the bigger issue is how the NRA is able to dictate the gun control debate. The NRA isn't what it used to be. They don't care about people's 2nd Amendment rights. They care about pleasing their shareholders who sell guns. They are essentially a marketing arm for guns. Their number 1 goal is to sell sell and sell. If they did not have as much as an influence as they currently do-we would probably see some action being taken. The NRA is basically a corporation disguised as a humble organization. The only reason they survive is because they have sold this paranoid fear that people are coming for their guns-when that is so far from the truth.
