Suppose Takata made perfectly good airbags (they didn't, but suppose they had).  They followed all the guidelines, did excellent quality control, and held their manufacturing processes to the highest possible standards. Now suppose Mr. Smith is killed in a car crash because he removed this top-quality airbag and sold it. 

Why on earth would Mr. Smith's family sue Takata?

Because if Mr Smith was hard up enough.that he sold his airbag for gas money - the lawyer is gonna look for somebody with.more - Takata - for not making removing the airbag impossible.... Or something..
