I don't like it either. It is the powerful protecting the powerful. But having said that, I think the long term "reason" for good or bad, is that it goes to keeping allies on a global strategic scale.
Lots of times with things like this, there may not be a charge, but the person ends up having to resign their position and is persona non grata.
If I were President, I'd hand her over to the Brits, but I am not in charge.
