Yeah, that isn't my patriotism. Mine depends on the basic decency and truth of the american dream. People can argue over how to best capture that life, and I support that wholeheartedly,.....but I can't say that I ever expected anyone to call the entire framework into question.
When they do that, I remember how some kid who's name I never knew choked on blood under my own hands until I killed him. Until he stopped breathing. I remember how certain I was...that I was in the right.
I still think I am, but what does it matter if theres no one behind me, nothing more than the man who's hands were on some mothers sons throat? There can be atonement if her grandchildren live a better life because of it. There can be atonement if we persist, and our dream persists. If we give that up....i'm just some asshole who strangled a kid to death on the order of a king.
