Plenty of reasons..but not any that I could, with a straight face, defend on the grounds offered. This seems more like a contrarian position than something I would tell the court or my wife...cradling the body of our dead child. Or worse, someone else's, shot dead by mine's hand.

Pretty much right to remain silent shit, right thur. No reason to self incriminate. The only way to reduce a cap charge is to insist that there are reasonable explanations for why no one knew that the firearm was unsecured within a childs reach. It can happen. Say your so leaves the firearm in that state, lets even say it's super rare. That you and everyone else knows that your home is usually very responsible - but your kid shot himself while you were home, not your so.
Your so is fucked, but you can skate.
It's a function of the constitutionally sensitive nature of gun law that they end up being written in a very permissive way. What could be manslaughter when the two parties are adults might not even be enforceable when the dead party is a child that shot themself, in the us.
