It probably is sexual assault and not rape. Honestly, I've tended to use the two terms more or less interchangeably. And, odds are, Reade's allegation was made public well after the statute of limitations expired. It would have been nice if they'd investigated it earlier, but, frankly, I've read enough about such cases to know that it's a crapshoot whether or not the cops would actually DO anything about it, so it's little wonder that many victims don't actually report what happened to them. Once again, here's an example of what happened to one of Dahvie Vanity of Blood on the Dance Floor's victims when they called the police shortly after her assault took place:
Why, yes, waiting twenty-odd years before going public with these claims DOES make it harder for anything to actually happen and it's absolutely horrible that it's unreliable enough that they feel they have to end up going this route, but it's depressingly understandable if you know how this tends to work.
