In mere reality, people have a strong emotional response towards retaining their faiths, or fitting in with the faiths of their peers. That's how the strong emotional response angle plays out. It's working for the god botherers, not against them.
It's a central component of all successful religious beliefs. Their ability to compell or create a profound emotional response that is effective in the world. Without that, they tend to piddle out, replaced by the next that can.
