Atheists don't have the option of passing judgment and then imagining that a just universe deals out the appropriate punishment.
But we are certainly capable of passing judgment on huge numbers of people, without really taking the time to understand them. Declaring that some huge segment of humanity is PSYCHOTIC is not so different from saying that they're bad, that they can't be saved, that they don't deserve our sympathy.
There is a lovely view among some Christians that God is the One, is complete connectedness. That everything is actually infinitely connected, and heaven is just the state of perceiving that infinity. For these Christians, hell is the opposite: total disconnection, in which we think so highly of ourselves that we no longer see our intimate indissoluble attachment to others. It is only in this state that we can lose our empathy and declare that people unlike ourselves are bad, and that we are superior. For these Christians, we put ourselves in hell by passing judgment, losing empathy, and calling others irredeemable.
