An excellent example of how cops now view themselves is this (thanks to Brian37 for the link). The relevant bit starts at 3:36.
When cops use force against people for talking - not rioting, not looting, not blocking traffic, just talking - it's painfully obvious that the current problems are not individual police, but the way the police and the public view law enforcement in general.
Firing, arresting, charging, and (hopefully) convicting bad cops is all well and good as far as it goes, but it isn't going to fix the problem.
