We saw a round of that with satellite. At first you could get anything you wanted with a big ugly dish and a set top box. Then the individual channels started charging subscriptions, then the local broadcasters started scrambling their satellite broadcasts... Now you get to chose Dish Network or DirecTV. At least satellite gives you a choice. If you're stuck with cable, you're typically stuck with a single provider and since they're the broadband providers as well... Same cycle, different generation.
