Stars and Stripes had it's day. But it was NOT the free press. It was a moral booster - and run by "the powers that be". You did not get truth from S+S. You got Uncle Sam's distilled version. You got what they wanted you to get.
The best thing I recall about Stars and Stripes back when I would pick it up now and then was news regarding changes to things like the PX, commissary, DODs school information (my girls went to DODs schools for a few years), and other information such as that.
Today I found out that the PX is doubling credit so that GIs can afford to get their new Class A's. I won't need to look at that paper for another 30 years.
