If the French and British had reacted when Hitler remilitarized the Rhineland there would have been an attempt to unseat Hitler.
In both Rhineland and July 44 plot, the German army only acted, quite ineffectually, to forestall what appeared to be imminent and Complete military defeat. It, including most of the major July coup plotters such as Stauffenberg himself, was otherwise quite happy With hitlerian policy objectives, totalitarianism, and most importantly, hitlerian atrocity.
If we are to put our hopes in an american stauffenberg, then we are really putting hopes in China and Russian being on the verge of achieving total victory over the country and wiping us off the map, and the military thinks a change of government is the only way to lessen the severity of the Carthaginian peace they will impose upon us, AND THEREBY SAVING SOME OF THE ACCUSTOMED INFLUENCES AND SOCIAL PRIVILEGES OF THE OFFICER CLASS. We can not hope that the military will uphold democracy at home because of nobility of purpose.
Even if a few officers have such nobility of purpose, the chain of command will stifle them.
