It turns out, those of us who suspected all along that Donald Trump was no billionaire or successful tycoon, that rather he's a fraud and a con-artist who only plays the role, were right all along. 

The Times obtained Donald Trump’s tax information extending over more than two decades, revealing struggling properties, vast write-offs, an audit battle and hundreds of millions in debt coming due. 

...Ultimately, Mr. Trump has been more successful playing a business mogul than being one in real life.

To much of his base, he is there to stick it to the liberals.   It is all the better if he prove incompetent at everything, because liberals tend to be educated and think competence and expertise matters.   Nothing can be more rousing to the trump base than the spectacle of a moron who is no good at anything living the high life and seeming to pose impassable barrier to the liberals with their high flutin education and expertise.
