I don't think it was a threat, and I don't feel threatened.  I think he got the question.  Trumpism is a black box for some people.  They express surprise at what the trumpers say and get up to - but put into the context of the trumpers beliefs, their behavior is rational and explicable - perhaps the -only- rational course of action.  He understands as much when asked to consider his own views and likely reaction/attidude.

Even terrorists are raised to despise terrorism - by the time they get around to doing something shitty, they don't think it's terrorism.

All due respect and suchlike, but that's not your call to make.
