I agree that Brian did a stupid thing by going off and leaving his cash behind, but that’s immaterial. Suppose he’d left the keys in a car with the engine running (another stupid thing to do). Is it really sensible to think that he’s abandoned the car and that it’s anyone’s for the taking?

Just trying to see where people draw the line at what constitutes a "pile" of money as Zilla described it.

I still think something to treat the scatter-brainedness is a good idea.  

It's not about being a dumb ass...it's about not paying attention or maybe not being able to pay attention.  There's help for that.

I agree that it seems to be a problem and he should seek treatment.  No argument.
