Sounds a bit like the Millerites. After the world completely failed to end as predicted on 22 October 1844, some of the Millerites picked other dates, some rejoined their previous sects. A fair few, however, got impressively ballsy and claimed that the world had indeed ended as scheduled - if the rest of us hadn't notice, that was our look-out.
