This was Ashli E. Babbitt, an Air Force veteran from the San Diego area. She was 35. As a decorated Iraqi campaign vet, she should have known how wrong she was to invade the capitol of her own country. It was said that she saw how people lived in other countries and was grateful for the freedoms of a US citizen, but as we all know and Republicans have regularly reminded us, those freedoms come with personal responsibility. Ashli demonstrated poor judgement yesterday. It is a shame that a woman who served in the military, was deployed in foreign countries and was not even in her 40's is now dead because she lost sight of what it is to be an American. She was a libertarian. That's great; there are a lot of great ideas that come from that political POV. But she lost track of that because she fell under the spell of one Donald J. Trump. Numerous people, dozens of them, have spoken out about how selfish and disloyal Trump is and all of them who have fallen out of favor of him have expressed deep regret for every following him. It is a cult of personality, not much different than that of Sun Myung Moon and Jim Jones. Our country needs people like Ashli, with the experiences she had. But we need to them to stay sane and not follow demagogues.
It's said she often used the phrase WWG1WGA, meaning, "Where We Go One, We Go All", but that only applied to QAnon people. What about the rest of America? She served in the military of the USA, not the UST (United States of Trump). How can such a person become so infatuated by another person that they can compartmentalize everything they know about honor and justice? She didn't do what she did because of a personal indignity or a family member who experienced racial discrimination. How anyone can justify such action is beyond me. What she expected to happen, I have no idea. It is a shame that she had to meet her end, but she put her own life on the line and she did it for the biggest nutjob in this entire country.
Bold mine -
This is why cults can be so dangerous. When fearless leader says put yourself in harm's way - you do.
