As a minor nag in the spirit of accuracy, the catholic church does maintain that gay catholics can't be married. They aggressively push civil unions, this pope aggressively pushes civil unions. Not because they're reformers or have a more progressive pov - but because they believe that their cantrips and rituals are the only way to be married, actually married, in the first place.
A gay catholic can't get the product desired from anyone. It doesn't matter if he goes to some other denominations church - they don't sell the product there. Marriage to civil union in catholicism is like champagne to sparkling white wine.
