The Taliban assisted in the retreat because they need to demonstrate that they can actually run things. This will lead to foreign investment, which will provide money, which will enable the Taliban to mount further terrorist operations.

America also retreated to "catch its breath" after the defeat and the wasting of 2 Trillion Dollars on the war.
