Australia is a bit of a special case. When The brits first arrived, Australia was classified 'terrra nullius'. IE vacant, no human beings living here. No one knows how many indigenous people lived here at the time. Estimates vary from 300,000 to 3 million. The official opinion was that the aboriginals were a dying race. Until 1963 they were not even counted in the census. They were classified as 'fauna'
Until the mid 70's, the government removed mixed race children from indigenous parents to be brought up white and trained as domestic servants. These children became known as "The Stolen Generations" No one has ever mentioned anything about abuses which almost certainly went on in those government institutions. Starting with the ghastly offence of kids speaking their own language.
