Agreed. It frankly seems like a substantial portion of our population, roughly 40% or so if the 2008 election is any indication, is living in an alternate reality. I mean, how else can you describe it? I'm not even talking about subjective political differences or even religious beliefs concerning "spiritual" matters but hard, verifiable facts about things happening in this physical world we all supposedly live in.
As I've said before, I was once a Reaganian conservative and had a lot of ill-informed beliefs about a lot of things. However, times seemed different back then. When I argued politics or economics with liberals, I spent 10% of the time debating what the facts were and 90% of the time what to make of them or how to fix our problems. I also never accused liberals of being "traitors" or "against America" or any of that other crap that's so common today. And "socialist" was an economic ideology used to describe those who embraced that label, not a pejorative hurled at anyone to the left of Rush Limbaugh.
Today, the situation is reversed. We spend 90% of our time just nailing down what the facts are and frequently not succeeding. They live in a world where black is white, night is day and Obama is a socialist. It should be no surprise that in the party that represents them, the inmates have come to be in charge of the asylum.
