To clarify -- if you leave your guns unlocked - and someone breaks in and steals them - you the gun owner can be held criminally and civilly liable for those guns misuse.
The ONLY exemption is if they are stolen from a locked gun safe.
So if you give someone access - you can ( and should) be held liable if they access and misuse your guns.
If I give you the combination - I give you access. If you have access - you can take the gun - and I cannot claim it is stolen.

By giving the kid access to the safe the father negates any right to protection from liability by way of the exemption.....
But the gun was stolen from a locked safe. Who had the comb8ination ( or how they got it) seems immaterial.
