Agreed - I can walk upstairs right now and pick up a pistol or a shotgun. I don't want to.
For these things to happen there has to be intent as well as access.
But volume makes access easy doesn't it? I don't think it is wise to assume that everyone whom wants to own a dangerous object will automatically go their entire life using it wisely.
Ultimately it is about a flooded market, and ease of access. In a perfect world I would agree with you. But the truth is firearms are too easy to get in a flooded market, and they are handed out like candy.
