If you kill someone because they slept with your wife, it's a crime.
If you kill someone because they're black, it's also a crime.
But the two crimes aren't the same. And targeting someone because of their race/sexuality/religious stance is inherently worse than just killing someone and thus deserving of a harsher sentence. It also says that you are predispositioned to commit the crime again, against the same race/sexuality/religious stance. Which makes you a threat to society.
By that metric anyone who has ever displayed bigotry or prejudice is guilty of a crime and deserving of jail time.
