Well, ignoring that this all presumes that self-awareness is a form of representation by the brain, studies suggest the difficulty lies in not having a model of the mental side of self-awareness that is as well developed as its model of the physical side of selfhood, leading to errors of prediction. Not all this argle bargle about time. I'm pretty sure this disparity is replicated across the entire spectrum of self-awareness due to the physical self being something that can be perceived, whereas the part of self responsible for behavior not being likewise observable.
